WoofWell® and the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC)

For animals, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) official recognizes only two classes of products: food (which includes “treats”) and drugs. Depending on the intended use, a product intended as an animal dietary supplement is considered either a food or drug. There is no separate category specifically designated as “supplements” for animals.

In the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994, the term “dietary supplement” was defined but it did not specify if the definition applied to humans, animals, or both. The main effect of DSHEA was to reclassify certain dietary ingredients from regulation as food additives, which require pre-market approval. But in 1996, CVM published a notice in the Federal Register to explain that DSHEA did not apply to animal products.

However, it is clear that even the most premium dog foods don’t provide all the essential ingredients for optimal long-term functional health support for dogs, so there is a sound need to supplement a dog’s normal daily food diet.

Some supplements that are safe for humans can be toxic to dogs or cats. Therefore, it is imperative that pet owners consult with their veterinarians before giving a dietary supplement to their pet. This is also why WoofWell®  has worked with the NASC to ensure that every WoofWell®  breed-specific product is formulated and manufactured to the highest standards, and that every ingredient in WoofWell®  Breed-Specific Health Supplements for Dogs is carefully evaluated by veterinarians and dog health experts for safety, compatibility with other ingredients, and proper dosage for each dog.

Following extensive research and a through audit by NASC, WoofWell®  has earned the coveted NASC Quality Seal, which is no small accomplishment.

What is the NASC Quality Seal and why does it matter?

Since FDA and the DSHEA regulations do not officially recognize a category of “supplements” for pets, the National Animal Supplement Council has stepped in to work with FDA and manufacturers to bridge this gap.

In order to bear their Safety Seal, companies must adhere to strict guidelines to ensure their products are manufactured under the strictest guidelines in the industry.  The Safety Seal provide assurance to the public that products are manufactured to provide the maximum

The National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) is dedicated to improving and standardizing the animal supplement industry by awarding their Quality Seal to companies that meet their rigorous standards. The NASC’s mission is to promote the health and well-being of companion animals that consume supplements, and to protect and enhance the animal health supplement industry as a whole.

Through close collaboration with federal and state regulators, including FDA, the NASC successfully achieves self-regulation of the industry and provides a complete regulatory roadmap for members. The National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) is committed to improving and standardizing the animal supplement industry by awarding their Quality Seal to companies that meet their rigorous standards.

The NASC Quality program provides strict guidelines for product quality assurance, adverse event reporting and labeling standards. Members must earn permission to display the Quality Seal by passing a comprehensive facility audit every two years, maintaining ongoing compliance with rigorous NASC quality standards, and passing random independent testing of their products to help ensure they are meeting label claims.

WoofWell®  is proud to have earned the NASC Quality Seal as our guarantee to you of the highest level of manufacturing and product quality.

The next time you’re shopping for supplements for your four-legged family member, look for the NASC Quality Seal to know you’re purchasing from a responsible supplier. A commitment to attaining the highest standards of quality and vigilance shouldn’t be an option when it comes to your dog’s health!
